I teach and I write philosophy. I am currently working on the impact the digital is having on the human species. I have just finished writing  (with Richard Frankel) Human Virtuality and Digital Life: Philosophical and Psychoanalytic Investigations (Routledge, forthcoming 2021), where we explore the "powerful unconscious currents that wind their way through our contemporary absorption in the digital", as we put it in the introduction. 

 

What brought me to technology, apart from the trauma the virtual world has meant for us pre-digitals, was my fascination with the image, and particularly with the moving image; a fascination that I have had since that day when, at about ten or eleven, I accidentally discovered  an unexpected camera obscura that projected on the ceiling of my bedroom, exact moving images of the cars passing by in the street below. Since then, I believe everything I have studied has in some sense been related to images.

 

I delved in the jungian territories of imagination and alchemy, I filled my coffers with his archetypal reading of the mythological imagination  and  with his psychoanalytic vision went on to study philosophy. I have spent most of my academic life sorting out the ways in which to make compatible what i learned there with what I have read from Wittgenstein, Benjamin, Derrida, Deleuze, Cavell, Agamben, my closest authors.

Enseño y escribo filosofía. Actualmente estoy trabajando en el impacto que lo digital está teniendo en la especie humana. Acabo de terminar de escribir (con Richard Frankel) Virtudes humanas y vida digital: Investigaciones filosóficas y psicoanalíticas (Routledge, de próxima aparición en 2021), donde exploramos las "poderosas corrientes inconscientes que se abren paso a través de nuestra absorción contemporánea en lo digital", tal como lo expresamos en la introducción. 

 

Lo que me llevó a la tecnología, aparte del trauma que el mundo virtual ha supuesto para nosotros los pre-digitales, fue mi fascinación por la imagen, y en particular por la imagen en movimiento; una fascinación que he tenido desde aquel día en que, a eso de las diez u once, descubrí accidentalmente una inesperada cámara oscura que proyectaba en el techo de mi dormitorio, imágenes exactas en movimiento de los coches que pasaban por la calle de abajo. Desde entonces, creo que todo lo que he estudiado ha estado relacionado de alguna manera con las imágenes.

 

Me adentré en los territorios jungianos de la imaginación y la alquimia, llené mis arcas con su lectura arquetípica de la imaginación mitológica y con su visión psicoanalítica pasé a estudiar filosofía. He pasado la mayor parte de mi vida académica ordenando las formas de hacer compatible lo que aprendí allí con lo que he leído de Wittgenstein, Benjamin, Derrida, Deleuze, Cavell, Agamben, mis autores más cercanos.
